The dog days of summer refer to the hot days between July 3 and August 11. The “dog” references Sirius, the Dog Star. During this period, the sun and Sirius— the Dog Star—rise and set together. According to the Farmer’s Almanac, when the sun and Sirius would be in conjunction, on July 23, the ancient Romans believed it actually gave off heat and added to the sun’s warmth because of the brightness of the star. So, the ancient Romans called the twenty days before and twenty days after the conjunction of Sirius and the sun as the “dog days” of summer.
This summer, after a ruff period when everything went virtual due the pandemic, many attorneys continue to work remotely. It can be paw-sitively delightful to have a canine companion by your side while you are workin’ like a dog from home. Whether they are holding court in the yard or sporting their best collar, these furry friends can make us feel like we have a new leash on life.
