Orange County Bar Association to Honor Thurgood Marshall as First Tribute in ‘Legal Giants’ Series
NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.—The Orange County Bar Association (OCBA) recently launched a new series of educational programs that will pay tribute to legal giants who have had an enormous impact on the United States justice system as well as on the nation as a whole. The inaugural installment of the series, co-sponsored by the University of California, Irvine School of Law and entitled “Thurgood Marshall: A Salute to a Giant in Civil Rights Jurisprudence and Leadership,” will be held Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, at the UC Irvine Education Building, Classroom 1111, in Irvine.
OCBA President Dimetria Jackson will moderate a panel comprised of UC Irvine School of Law Dean and Distinguished Professor Erwin Chemerinsky and University of Southern California Gould School of Law Professor Rebecca Brown, who previously served as law clerk to Justice Marshall. Together, they will discuss the seminal contributions made by Justice Marshall and how his jurisprudence still impacts the United States Supreme Court today.
The first African American Justice on the United States Supreme Court, Marshall was also the lead attorney on the landmark Brown v. Board of Education case, which resulted in the declaration of the “separate but equal” doctrine of public education established by the Plessy v. Ferguson decision to be unconstitutional. Prior to his tenure on the United States Superior Court, Marshall was appointed to the Second Court of Appeals by President John F. Kennedy in 1961 and to Solicitor General by President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1965; President Johnson elevated Marshall to the Supreme Court Bench in 1967, where he sat until his retirement in 1991.
