October 2014 - The OCBA’s 2015 Secretarial Candidates: Solange E. Ritchie and Nikki P. Miliband

In the OCBA’s annual popular election, two outstanding and contributing members of the Orange County legal community are nominated for Secretary of the OCBA to serve the term beginning January 1, 2015. Yearly, the Secretary elevates to Treasurer, President-Elect, President, and Immediate Past-President. Whomever you elect will influence the development and direction of the OCBA for years to come. If you are an active, attorney member of the OCBA, please vote. The online election will be open from Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014 through 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21.

In alphabetical order, allow us to introduce your two candidates for OCBA Secretary: Nikki P. Miliband and Solange E. Ritchie.

Nikki P. Miliband
Nikki Miliband, a trust and probate litigator with Newport Beach-based Good, Wildman, Hegness & Walley, was raised—and in 1990 licensed—in Oklahoma, moving to California shortly thereafter. An active member of the OCBA since 1992, she credits the OCBA with introducing her to her then-future husband, Joel Miliband, at the 1996 OCBA Conference of Delegates dinner.

Always believing in giving back to the profession and the community through volunteer service, Nikki currently serves in her second term on the OCBA Board of Directors; member, OCBA’s Charitable Fund board since 2008; Chair, Lawyer Referral & Information Service Committee since 2008; Co-Chair, Mentoring Committee since 2013; Legislative Resolutions Committee (2007 Chair); member, blue ribbon Administration of Justice Committee; member, Access to Justice Task Force; Mandatory Fee Arbitration arbitrator; and a member of the Trusts & Estates and Elder Law sections. She has also devoted countless hours to the OCBA Charitable Fund’s Annual Fall Gala, as Chair or Co-Chair since 2008.

Nikki will work to ensure that the OCBA remains relevant to its membership so that members can be connected through participation in their bar association, promotes professionalism and ethics, delivers quality and cost-effective educational programs, provides networking and professional growth opportunities, and continues to offer and expand upon member benefits.

The OCBA, as a voluntary bar association, has both the burden and the blessing of presenting Orange County lawyers with a reason for joining. Nikki will devote the same tireless energy she has already demonstrated for over twenty years to continue to build a bar association in which the membership can be proud and in which membership is an honor. Working together, Orange County attorneys can accomplish greatness in the representation of clients, and in the quality of the practice of law.

Solange E. Ritchie
Solange Ritchie is an attorney with the Law Offices of Steven R. Young handling civil litigation. As a three-term OCBA Board member, Solange asks for your vote because she leads by example. Words are easy. To lead by example takes commitment and integrity.

Solange was born in Jamaica. After witnessing a breakdown of social order, she immigrated to the United States at age eleven. Ever since, she has been dedicated to justice.

Anyone who knows Solange knows her “can do” spirit. In addition to serving on the OCBA’s Board of Directors since 2005, Solange co-chaired the OCBA Charitable Fund gala since 2008. She chaired the Committee on Diversity and Equal Justice and Resolutions Committees. Over the years, she served on too many OCBA committees to list here.

In 2008, Solange was president of OCAABA, OCWLA, and the Peter M. Elliott Inn of Court. She continues to serve on or support many affiliates including OCTLA, OCWLA and CWL, HBA, and the Celtic Bar.

In 2008-2009, Solange was recognized as NAWBO’s Remarkable Woman and OCWLA’s Attorney of the Year. Last year, Western State College of Law—where she was Editor-in-Chief of law review—inducted Solange into its Alumni Hall of Fame.

For her commitment to the bar, she received the Myer J. Sanksary award from the California State Bar’s Solo and Small Firm Section this year.

But more than this, Solange believes in giving back. She routinely opens her home to our legal community. Why? Because only through friendships do competent future leaders emerge.

She has published numerous articles, and has spoken across the country and internationally, from Prague to Costa Rica. Her mission is to serve you, our OCBA members. To see Solange’s endorsers, to learn more about her qualifications, and to support her, go to www.solangeritchielaw.com.
