This program will provide an overview of tax insurance (also known as “tax liability insurance” and “tax opinion insurance”), explaining what it is, how it typically works, and the recent (and dramatic) increase in its use. In addition, this program will discuss how tax insurance can be helpful for clients, compare tax insurance to other methods through which taxpayers can get comfort about their tax treatment (e.g., tax opinions and private letter rulings), and discuss which approach to getting tax comfort is likely most useful in which situations.
