Jurist Spotlight: Justice David Souter        

 

Justice David H. Souter brought intellectual rigor and humility to his nearly two decades on the U.S. Supreme Court. Appointed in 1990 by President George H. W. Bush, expectations were that he would reinforce the Court’s conservative majority. Instead, his independent, case-by-case approach led him to align with the Court’s liberal wing on many of its most consequential decisions. His jurisprudence helped shape pivotal rulings on abortion, evidence, detainee rights, and the separation of church and state.
