Peremptory Challenges in Jury Selection: Navigating the New Frontier Under CCP Section 231.7
“A party shall not use a peremptory challenge to remove a prospective juror on the basis of the prospective juror’s race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, or religious affiliation, or the perceived membership of the prospective juror in any of those groups.” (Code Civ. Proc., ยง 231.7, subd. (a).)
Join us as we examine newly codified standards for anyone exercising peremptory challenges in jury trials. Code of Civil Procedure section 231.7 is currently operative in criminal trials and will become operative in civil trials beginning January 1, 2026. This program will offer a frank discussion among seasoned criminal trial experts who regularly deal with the nuts and bolts of jury selection under the new law. You will learn how to best navigate peremptory challenges, with tips and tricks on how to make a solid record on appeal. This program is a must for any criminal or civil attorney trying cases in the State of California.
