The Power of Narrative and the Lawyer as the Storyteller: Practical Narrative Techniques from Demand to Trial
Great advocacy isn’t just about reciting facts or law—it’s about telling a compelling story. The side that tells the right story wins, long before verdict. This presentation explores storytelling as a core litigation skill that applies at every stage of a case: demand letters, mediations, motions, examinations, trial, and particularly, opening statements. Drawing from proven narrative structure, the program breaks down how effective legal stories are built—from the inciting incident, through points of impact, to a persuasive and inevitable conclusion. Using real-world examples and short video clips, Steven Young, with over 175 civil jury trial results, demonstrates how judges, juries, and opposing counsel process cases as stories long before they evaluate legal arguments. This session challenges practitioners to consider how they present cases. Attendees will leave with practical tools for developing clearer, more compelling narratives that persuade all decision-makers.
This program is approved for 1.0 CLE Credit. Attendees must have participated in the program in its entirety to receive MCLE credit.
