Jury Selection in Light of Code Civil Procedure 231.7

Tom Beasley from the Anaheim City Attorney's Office will discuss how California Code of Civil Procedure section 231.7 reshapes jury selection by prohibiting peremptory challenges based on implicit and explicit bias. The presentation will explain the satute's expanded list of protected characteristicsand the new standards courts use to evaluate whether a juror strike is impermissibly discriminatory. Attendees will learn how the burden-shifting framework works, including the requirement that reasons for a strike be objectively reasonable and unrelated to stereotypes. The session will also cover practical impacts on trial strategy, common pitfalls, and recent applications of section 231.7 in California courts.

This program is approved for 1.0 Elimination of Bias Credit. Attendees must have participated in the program in its entirety to receive MCLE credit.

Cancellations must be received in writing via fax or email three (3) business days prior to meeting date to receive a refund.
