This program will provide an overview of commercial legal finance- broadly speaking, the deployment of non-lawyer capital to permit sharing or shifting of litigation risk, enhancing the ability of parties and lawyers to realize the value of their legal claims and lawyer time. It will address the two chief legal finance products- litigation funding and claim/fee monetization- and how they are brought to bear to address the various needs of litigants and lawyers. And it will explain, among other things, the typical economics of legal finance, the underwriting and claims management process, and the relationships among parties, lawyers and financiers in such transactions, The goal is to provide attendees with the knowledge needed to determine when a client or a law firm with a matter, or portfolio of maters, might benefit from third-party financing.
