An important update regarding COVID-19

Vol. 2021, No. 4 April 2021

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

Dear Members and Friends of the Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County,

Our country is going through many changes; we are hopefully on the road to recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic as more people get vaccinated. However, defeating the pandemic is only one part of the crisis that our country is currently facing. We must fight to defeat systematic racism. The guilty verdict from the George Floyd case is a start; however, we must not celebrate this as a victory for justice and let it fade away. The road to racial justice has just begun and it will take each and every one of us to take a stand and make a difference. Our country was founded on the very principle that ALL PEOPLE ARE CREATED EQUAL with fundamental rights of LIBERTY and JUSTICE FOR ALL. We all enjoy the freedoms and benefits which our founding fathers fought for, but a mere three months ago we witnessed how fragile our democracy can be. It is up to each one of us to take responsibility and defend our freedoms and fight for justice for ourselves, for our neighbors, for our community, for our country. We are all in this together and only together will we be able to make changes. Let us take a lesson from warriors such as Martin Luther King, Jr., Cesar Chavez, Harriet Tubman, Dolores Huerta, Felicitas and Gonzalo Mendez, Rosa Parks, and so many others who without notoriety have fought for equality and justice.

As the HBA remains committed to being part of the change towards racial justice, we also remain committed to our mission statement to: promote educationunity, and excellence in the Hispanic legal community. Our commitment to the future generations of legal professionals has been supported by all of our members for 43 years now.

Our total gratitude to all of our sponsors and members for your commitment to the HBA which allows us to provide scholarships every year. It was because of all of you, that we were able to celebrate our 43rd Annual Scholarship Fundraiser & Installation Dinner last month. Our virtual event, was a sold out success, and despite the pandemic, our community came together to provide scholarships to very deserving law students, THANK YOU!

Our mentee, Tiffany Kemp expresses her gratitude for the mentorship program and shares her experience:

I registered to attend the resume workshop with OCHBA back in December of 2020. I was seeking the Lord for guidance in search of a new job. In Matthew 6:33 says "But seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you." I stepped out on faith and updated my resume. I had been at my previous job for almost 6 years driving 90 miles.. I thank Briana Koeppe for her wonderful tips at the workshop, because it helped me tremendously in obtaining my new position as a Legal Discovery Support Representative.

OCHBA offers wonderful mentorship for law students; I was paired with Shelly Aronson in January 2021. Shelly has provided me with some tools for exam writing for law school. I am a visual learner and some learning styles I do not adapt to well at all. She has provided great feedback on how to improve my writing. I have received some great feedback from her as well. One of my struggles with exams is the time conditions. Secondly, I really did not understand about outlining every exam. Thirdly, I wanted to make sure I was issue spotting every exam. Shelly has taught me to just outline an essay first and practice, practice, practice, especially under timed conditions. I have been practicing and doing better.

Make a difference in a law student’s journey, join us and become an attorney mentor. Please email us at mentors@ochba.org if you are interested in becoming a mentor.

It is our pleasure to welcome new and returning members to the HBA, we’re so happy to have you!

Please stay tuned for our upcoming events, remember to renew your membership to receive member pricing.

Hope to cheers with all of you with delicious margaritas at Our Cinco de Mayo Celebration!
