Morrison & Foerster LLP A team of 45 attorneys across six different offices at Morrison & Foerster LLP have produced the Helping Handbook, a 189-page overview of some of the legal issues faced by individuals and businesses on the Gulf Coast affected by Hurricane Katrina and the damage that ensued. The Handbook is targeted to individuals, families, and small businesses in Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.
The American Bar Association
ABA has established a website to assist those attorneys who are providing assistance to people whose lives have been shattered. The website will be continually updated over the coming weeks as more information and resources are made available. The website may be accessed via the ABA homepage at www.abanet.org where attorneys can volunteer to provide legal assistance, find information on making donations for disaster relief and receive guidance on how you can most effectively help the victims of the hurricane. For our members directly impacted by the disaster, resources are available on rebuilding a law practice and disaster recovery plans. In addition to providing assistance to lawyers, the ABA website also serves as a valuable resource for the general public, offering referrals, hotline numbers, assistance for military personnel, small business owners and others.
LSBA Establishes Hurricane Katrina Legal Community Relief Fund
The Louisiana State Bar Association (LSBA), through the Baton Rouge Bar Foundation, has established the Hurricane Katrina Legal Community Relief Fund to help rebuild South Louisiana's legal infrastructure so that lawyers can provide needed legal services to their clients and restore their damaged offices and records in the wake of this disaster. Michael H. Rubin of Baton Rouge is chairing this effort. We are developing forms and criteria to apply for relief from the fund and this information will be posted on www.LSBA.org, as soon as it is available. All members of the legal profession are invited to contribute to the fund. Click here to link to additional information and the donation form.
The Mississippi Bar and Mississippi Bar Foundation
The Mississippi Bar and Mississippi Bar Foundation have established the Hurricane Katrina Lawyer Relief Fund to assist lawyers who have lost their offices in the storm. Funds collected will be used to assist lawyers with re-establishing their law offices. Donations should be made payable to Mississippi Bar Foundation and mailed to Hurricane Katrina Lawyer Relief Fund, c/o Mississippi Bar Foundation, P O Box 2168, Jackson, MS 39225-2168. The Bar is also soliciting any resources that will assist lawyers in re-opening and operating their law offices. Examples include temporary office space, used office equipment, used office furniture, etc. If you would like to help, please email Larry Houchins at houchins@msbar.org. Please include contact information and what resources you have available and are willing to donate.
