Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County Adopts Resolution Supporting the DREAM Act
The Hispanic Bar Association of Orange County (“HBA”) has adopted a resolution supporting the DREAM Act, a bill that seeks to create a pathway to citizenship for undocumented youth raised in the United States. The HBA notes the DREAM Act is “a way of reasserting the value of education within the Latino community and increasing the value of personal investment within the Latino community.” The resolution, which calls on Congress to act in passing the law, comes at a time when discussion of immigration reform is on the rise from both political parties.

In its call for members and other legal professional to lobby for support of the DREAM Act, the HBA joins other prominent Latino organizations who have recently taken official positions in support of immigration reform, including the Hispanic National Bar Association (HNBA), United States Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, and Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF).

The HBA is the largest and oldest ethnic-interest bar association in Orange County, celebrating its forty-second year in existence. It promotes Latino access to justice and participation in the legal systems, with activities intended to increase the number of legal education; the number of Latino attorneys practicing law in Orange County; and the number of Latinos serving on the bench. The HBA pursues these goals by granting law school scholarships to deserving students; holding law career panels at local high schools; overseeing an extensive law student-attorney mentorship program; and endorsing candidates for judicial office.
