The OCBA Salutes Our Veterans

by Richard W. Millar, Jr.s

Veterans Day is November 11th this year. It wasn’t always called Veterans Day and it hasn’t always been November 11th. It started out as Armistice Day by proclamation from President Wilson on November 12th. A few years later, Congress made it November 11th to reflect the actual day the Germans signed the Armistice. Since then we had, of course, another war and in the mid-1950’s the name was changed to Veterans Day. In 1971, in accordance with the “Let’s give everybody as many three day weekends as we can Act” it was moved to the fourth Monday in October. Eight years later it was moved back to November 11th, where it has remained except when it falls on a Sunday.

Whatever its name and whenever its date, over its 90-year history its purpose has been to honor our military veterans without whose service this country could well be a different place. In this context it is important to remember that lawyers are veterans too. And so, we recognize all the Orange County lawyers who have served our country in military service.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we salute you.
